Every once in a while, someone claims to have made ‘the hottest hot sauce in the world’. And hot sauce lovers everywhere go out, buy the product, try it and usually film their reactions and upload them to YouTube. Mad Dog is a company that prides itself on making exceedingly hot sauces. One of their most well-known products is called ‘Yellow Cake’ – it’s actually not a sauce, it’s capsicum powder that has a heat rating of 1,600,000 Scoville Units. It comes with a warning label and a disclaimer. But, thankfully, I’m here to talk to you about Mad Dog 367.

I don’t actually own this sauce. For the purpose of this review, I went and found a friend that had this sauce way back in their kitchen cupboards. I asked them if I could try it, just to see what it was like, and they poured me a pint of milk “ready for when it hits”.

Before I tried it, I looked at the sauce’s label. The label had such claims at ‘this sauce will blow you away’ and ‘use at your own risk’. I wasn’t exactly thrilled by the prospect of eating this sauce, but I knew I had to at least give it a go. I turned the bottle around, to read the back and there I was met with a six-point disclaimer and warning. To summarise, it said that this product is extremely dangerous, should only be used in small portions, and it says that I have to be of sound mind (and not intoxicated) to use this sauce. Wonderful, I thought.

I opened the bottle and took a cautious whiff. I instantly smelled pure chili extract. Uh-oh, I thought, this is going to be fun. Admittedly there were other smells there (barbecue, perhaps?) but I was too overwhelmed by the raw chili extract that was stinging my nostrils.

The reason it is called a Collector’s Edition is that it comes with a bullet-shaped keyring that contains a very tiny tasting spoon. Cute, right? I used the spoon and poured the tiniest blob onto the spoon, put it on my tongue and braced myself for what was to come.

Instantly, I was assaulted by the sheer heat in my mouth. Now, when I say ‘heat’, I don’t just mean ‘a little bit hot’, I mean ‘my mouth is on fire and everything hurts’. It tingled all over my mouth; my jaw started to ache and the back of my throat felt like it was on fire. I began to sweat: I thought to myself, “all this from just one drop?!” My friend saw my face, twisted in contortion, and passed me the pint of milk. Oh my God, I have never enjoyed milk so much in my life! But even after I gulped down a pint of the stuff, I could still feel the heat burning in my mouth. I had more milk, took some deep breaths and the heat eventually started to pass, only slightly. It took a good hour or so before all the heat had gone and I could function normally again. Needless to say, I won’t be trying that again.

There are some sauces that are all about heat; there are some sauces that are all about flavour; and, there are some sauces that are a wonderful combination of both. Mad Dog 357 is all about the heat and then some. I honestly could not think of any type of food I would want to put this sauce on: it seems as the only reason it exists is to give YouTubers a new challenge to try. If you want a sauce that will leave you with your life flashing before your eyes, then you’re a braver person than I am, and Mad Dog 357 Silver Collector’s Edition is right up your alley!
